What is ‘Trauma Porn’? Towards Developing an Anti-Oppressive and Trauma-Informed Spoken Word Praxis

I am pleased to be returning from nearly a year long silence to share a research study that I am conduction about trauma and spoken word. I will be sharing a reflexive piece about the research process in April, but for now I would like to share the recruitment invitation with you.

Letter of Invitation to Participate in an Academic Survey

Project Title: What is ‘Trauma Porn’? Towards Developing an Anti-Oppressive and Trauma-Informed Spoken Word Praxis

Dear Spoken Word Artist,

You are invited to participate in a study for a Women’s and Gender Studies undergraduate research project. The primary purpose of the research is to train the student researcher in the methods of feminist anti-oppressive research. The secondary purpose is to explore how spoken word artists work with trauma in their creative practice and make sense of the label ‘trauma porn.’

For this study, you will be asked to participate in an online survey that should take approximately 30 minutes. The survey will ask how you work with trauma in your creative practice. There will be questions about whether the label ‘trauma porn’ is helpful to the spoken word community, and you will be invited to share your ideas about creating a trauma-informed creative practice.

The survey is entirely anonymous, and I will have no way of connecting your data to you in any way. You may withdraw from the study at any time by closing your browser window or skipping any questions that you don’t feel comfortable answering. Your participation in this project is voluntary, and you are under no obligation to participate.

The link to participate in the survey is: https://forms.gle/K7ZS2MvYvZUu8x4m6

The survey will close at Noon CST on March 26th, 2022.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please contact the student researcher or my supervisor.

Sincerely,

Bethani Jade Groat
